Abstract

Objective: To analyze the emotional state and classify the symptoms of anxiety and depression in women who suffered a miscarriage during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This is a quantitative, descriptive, exploratory cross-sectional study. The study was carried out in a public maternity hospital in Pernambuco, where 57 women were interviewed using sociodemographic and obstetric questionnaires and the Anxiety and Depression Scale. The data were descriptively analyzed by absolute and percentage frequencies, and the categorical variables used: mean, standard deviation and median of the age variable. Such data were tabulated using the Microsoft Excel® 2016 program. Results: During the hospitalization period, more than 70% and 10% of the interviewees expressed, in that order, feeling sadness and fear. Respectively, 19.3% and 12.3% of the women were classified as having probable symptoms of anxiety and depression. Conclusion: Although the majority expressed the presence of negative feelings, symptoms suggestive of anxiety and depression were present only in a small number of women who suffered a miscarriage. These data contribute to the visibility of the proposed topic, as it exposes the weaknesses found in the studied public, in order to identify and meet their needs, both physical and psychological.
