Abstract

Objective: To analyze the conditions and characteristics of public spaces for the practice of physical activity in the Sanitary District II (DSII) of Recife/PE. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study conducted in public spaces intended for the practice of physical activity in the DSII. The instruments used were the Physical Activity Resource Assessment and the Community Environment Assessment Inventory. These instruments assess the availability and quality of equipment for the practice of physical activity in public spaces, and the main characteristics of the environment. Frequency distribution was used for data analysis. Results: 11 public spaces available for the practice of physical activity in the DSII were identified, distributed in seven neighborhoods. Traces of pollution were identified in all spaces (n=11), in most of them (n=10) there was no bicycle path on the sidewalks, but there were signs of a bicycle lane (n=5) and bicycle rack (n= two). For walking and running, good or excellent quality spaces were observed (n=5). The presence of unevenness, broken sidewalks and holes (n=3) was also identified. Conclusion: It is concluded that improvements are needed in infrastructure, provision of tools and services around these spaces, in order to improve and encourage access by the population.
