Abstract
Objective: To conduct a comprehensive literature review on dental adhesive systems in order to analyze and compile the current scientific knowledge available on the subject. Literature review: Conventional and self-adhesive resin cements, describing their compositions, bonding mechanisms, and properties. Conventional cements require the use of adhesive systems, while self-adhesive cements have acid-functional monomers that allow direct bonding to the tooth structure. Both types of cements are capable of promoting effective adhesion to different substrates such as dentin, ceramics, and zirconia. However, there are controversies regarding the bond strength to dentin and the need for pre-treatment. Final considerations: Self-adhesive resin cements emerge as an option to simplify cementation procedures, eliminating previous treatment steps and reducing clinical time. They demonstrate good mechanical strength, adhesion, and advantages such as lower technical sensitivity and reduced microleakage. However, it is important to consider their limitations, such as potential difficulties in bonding to certain substrates and the need to ensure adequate photopolymerization. The appropriate and conscious use of these materials can contribute to the clinical success of restorations.
