Abstract
Objective: To provide an updated evidence-based review of the effectiveness of a low FODMAP diet (LFD) as a treatment for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in adult and pediatric populations. Methods: An integrative literature review was carried out in the databases: PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Lilacs and Medline, where 176 studies on the subject were found, and only 10 original studies were included in the review, of which five articles focused on environments pediatric patients and the other five works developed in adult and elderly patients. Results: All the studies about low FODMAP diet have shown consistent benefits in the majority of adult patients with IBS, presenting an improvement in the general gastrointestinal symptoms, as well as in the individual ones, such as: abdominal pain, swelling, constipation, diarrhea, abdominal distention and flatulence after the diet. Nevertheless, there is a lack of good quality clinical studies that explore the effectiveness of the diet in children and adolescents. Final considerations: It is considered from the explored studies, that among the adult population the low FODMAP protocol has strong scientifical evidences, however in children it is uncertain, but there are enough signs to justify additional studies of better quality that might reinforce this action plan.
