Abstract
Objective: To analyze the characteristics of Achilles tendinopathy (TA) and patellar tendinopathy (PT). Bibliographic review: Tendinopathy represents degeneration or failure in healing due to continuous overload without adequate recovery of the affected tendon. It affects sedentary and active individuals, accounting for 30% to 50% of all sports injuries. Both upper and lower limbs are affected, with the rotator cuff, lateral elbow, gluteus, patellar and Achilles tendons being commonly affected. AT is a painful overuse injury of the Achilles tendon, whereas PT is a common chronic tendon injury characterized by pain related to load on the patellar tendon. Final considerations: PT and AT present as pain and edema in and around the tendon, mainly due to excessive use in the case of athletes or overweight patients due to overload. The management of these conditions is primarily done conservatively with the use of eccentric exercises, anti-inflammatories, tendon injections and extracorporeal shock wave therapy in addition to therapeutic ultrasound and laser therapy. If these therapies fail for 3 to 6 months, surgical procedures are considered.
