Abstract

Objective: To analyze the characteristics of the Opioid Use Disorder (OUD). Bibliographic review: Opioids are widely prescribed for chronic, oncological and acute pain patients in hospitalized and post-surgical interventions. The increase in the prescription of these agents has led to an opioid crisis in the United States of global concern, as these drugs can cause addiction and overdose deaths. OUD is chronic opioid use that causes clinically significant distress or impairment consisting of an overwhelming desire to use opioids, increased tolerance, and withdrawal syndrome when discontinued. This disorder affects around 510 people per 100,000 inhabitants worldwide. Final considerations: Given the increase in the use of opioids, their crisis and the potential of these drugs for dependence, misuse and overdose, it is essential to prescribe them to selected patients, in restricted doses and with adequate advice on safe use so that there is monitoring its effects on each individual. Furthermore, other classes of analgesics and non-pharmacological therapy should be prioritized to treat pain. There must also be control by health bodies over the prescription and sale of these medicines, in order to curb illegal trade.
