Abstract

Objective: To analyze the epidemiological profile of hospitalizations for Cerebral Vascular Accident (CVA) in Paraíba, between 2012 and 2021. Methods: Ecological, retrospective study with temporal analysis. Data on hospitalizations were collected in the Hospital Information System of the SUS IT Department (SIH/DATASUS), according to the year, hospital deaths, sex, age group, color/race, health macro-region and stroke subtype, and carried out analysis using descriptive statistics and calculation of in-hospital lethality. Results: 26,233 hospitalizations and 5,789 in-hospital deaths due to stroke were recorded during the study period. The absolute number of hospitalizations grew from 3,103 to 3,593 and the total number of in-hospital deaths fell from 652 to 643 from 2012 to 2021. There was a predominance of total hospitalizations by women (50.1%), elderly people (70.4 %), mixed race (54.2%), in macro-region I – João Pessoa (54.3%) and due to unspecified stroke (74.4%). Conclusion: The results reveal a high burden of hospitalizations and in-hospital deaths due to stroke in Paraíba. Understanding these epidemiological characteristics makes it possible to direct public health policies and clinical interventions, aiming to reduce morbidity and mortality and improve the quality of life of stroke patients in the state.
