Abstract

Objective: To investigate the activity of melatonin, as a possible tool in the treatment and reversal of possible damage caused to testicular tissue. Bibliographical review: Adequate nutrition in the critical period of development, in the lactation phase, has a profound impact on the maturation of mammalian reproductive structures and functions. It is already described in the literature as complications in the child's development that were applied to early weaning, which induces a nutritional imbalance in the profile, triggering a condition of metabolic stress. Among all the affected systems, the reproductive system can be affected acutely and chronically, even leading to fertility problems. In this context, melatonin is an adjuvant to nutritional therapy in the treatment and reversal of complications resulting from malnutrition. This is caused due to its antioxidant properties and the preservation of cellular structure, from the action of radicals produced from metabolic stress. Final considerations: Melatonin, due to its antioxidant and cell protection properties, can be an alternative treatment for damage caused by early weaning. Even though the literature lacks work that proves this hypothesis.
