Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the knowledge of the nursing team about care measures for Pneumonia Associated with Mechanical Ventilation (VAP) in the intensive care unit (ICU). Methods: Descriptive, cross-sectional study. The sample consisted of 318 participants (95 nurses and 225 nursing technicians). Results: The frequency of nurses with adequate performance in teaching was 87% and nursing technicians 51.5%. The frequency of nurses and nursing technicians who answered the question “do you feel you have enough knowledge about VAP prevention measures?” was 52.6% and 24% respectively. In the bivariate analysis, male gender, having a master's degree, working in the morning, participating in scientific events, shorter length of service were associated with better knowledge. Observe inadequate knowledge about care components in ventilatory assistance. The nursing technicians had an average knowledge ± SD of 8.95 ± 2.72 correct answers (Moderate knowledge), while the nurses, 10.45 ± 1.38 correct answers (Adequate knowledge). Conclusion: It is concluded that professionals have knowledge within the expected range for each professional category. We highlight the monitoring of the regular assessment of knowledge and training of the health team, through continuing education programs.
