Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the frequency of medication use in the elderly, with a view to identifying the possible cascade effect of therapeutic drugs in this population and their adverse reactions. Bibliographic Review: In Brazil, it is estimated that around 80% of elderly people use at least one type of medication. Furthermore, the use of more than one therapeutic drug is often observed, and often indiscriminately. Diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes and adverse disorders emerge as the most prevalent pathological conditions and are motivated by polypharmacy in the elderly, in which the class of antihypertensives, followed by oral hypoglycemic agents and antiplatelet agents, were the drugs with the greatest presence in everyday life. of the elderly population. From this perspective of polypharmacy, or with the use of potentially harmful medications, deprescription appears as a process of withdrawing an inappropriate medication, supervised by a health professional, with the aim of reducing adverse drug effects and improving patients' therapeutic results. Final considerations: Therefore, as more than 90% of elderly patients are receptive to discontinuing unnecessary medications when recommended by healthcare professionals, deprescribing in a primary care context may become easier for clinicians involved with patients and families.
