Abstract
Objective: To identify and describe hospital and outpatient expenses from Unified Health System an social security benefits from General Social Security, due to stroke in Brazil, in 2020. Methods: Cross-sectional and descriptive research, collecting and analyzing secondary data from the Outpatient and Hospital Information System of the Information Technology Department of the Unified Health System and the Social Security Historical Database. The data were tabulated and described by the number of hospital and outpatient procedures and social security benefits and their expenses. Results: Public system spending on stroke was 416 million reais, 77% hospital, 20% social security and only 3% outpatient, with a predominance of males. Clinical treatment of inpatients (94%) and imaging diagnosis (57%) resulted in the highest hospital and outpatient expenses respectively, and disability retirement (85%) led to the highest social security expens. Conclusion: Stroke hospital expenses were higher due to highly complex procedures, followed by social security and outpatient expenses and measures to combat risk factors and the implementation of a unified database would be fundamental to reducing public system spending on stroke in Brazil.
