Abstract

Objective: To analyze the prevalence of cancer with the prologated use of Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs). Methods: Integrative Literature Review study of exploratory nature emerging from the problematic "What is the prevalence and risks of cancer with prolonged use of Proton Pump Inhibitor drugs?" in the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), U.S. National Library of Medicine (PubMed), Medical Literature Analysis and Retrievel System Online (MEDLINE) and Embase databases, between 2011-2021. Results: Based on the quali-quantitative analysis of the 28 studies included in the review, 78.6% exposed a positive relationship to prolonged use of PPIs and prevalence of cancer, with positivity for gastric (86.7%), pancreas (80%), hepatic (75%), gastrointestinal (66.7%), esophagus, biliary tract (50%) and colorectal tract (44.4%). Final considerations: There is a literary divergence regarding the prolonged use of PPIs and neoplasms, however, the results are more frequent for studies addressing a significant positive association with prolonged use and gastric, colorectal, esophagus, pancreas, hepatic and gastrointestinal cancer. However, although its benefits well described in the literature, the present study presents sufficient evidence to recommend the rational use of PPIs considering criteria and monitoring of individuals submitted to treatments with such drugs.
