Abstract

Objective: Analyze Symptom control in elderly people hospitalized in Palliative Care as a strategy for a person-centered multidisciplinar care plan. Methods: Quantitative study, with 53 individuals, of both sexes, aged 60 years or over admitted to the onco-hematology ward. Data collection was divided into three moments to monitor symptoms using the Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale (ESAS) with elderly people hospitalized for up to 96 hours in the ward and records of evolution in medical records by professionals to adapt behaviors according to the sympotoms. Palliative Care verification scales, Palliative Care Screening Tool (PCST) and Palliative Performance Scale (PPS) were used. Results: Three symptoms most frequently reported stand out: pain (94%), malaise (92%) and fatigue (83%). There was a significant reduction in the mean ESAS scores after the team applied Symptom control measures. Conclusion: It is concluded that the management of symptoms in a serial manner over time combined with the muldidisciplinary care plan led to a reliable assessment of the elderly through the palliative approach as the association o fone Symptom with another allowed the formulation of strategies for management and control symptoms effectively.
