Abstract
Objective: Identify and synthesize scientific productions related to the use of medicinal marijuana and it’s compounds on the handling of inflammatory bowel disease. Methods: Integrative literature review, done on the following databases: National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI/PubMed), Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde, Embase (Elsevier), Web of Science and Scopus (Elsevier). The controlled descriptors used were Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) and Descriptors in Health Science (DeCS) such as: Patients, Gastroenteritis, Inflammation, Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, Signs and Symptoms, Gastrointestinal Tract, Cannabinoids, Cannabis and Medicinal Marijuana, combining the terms using the Boolean operators “OR” and “AND”. Results: 2.272 studies were identified according to search criteria, among which five composed the final sample, which evidenced the use of medicinal marijuana on inflammatory bowel disease, with results that showed improvement in signs and symptoms related to intestinal inflammatory processes, reduced intestinal permeability, weight gain and reduced tension in adults. However, one of the studies showed no significant improvement of the disease-related inflammatory markers. Final considerations: Even though the studies described significant improvement of signs and symptoms, different concentrations of active ingredients and mode of consumption are a factor that makes comparisons between studies difficult.
