Abstract

Objective: Identify the proportion of medical students from a public university exhibiting symptoms of depression, anxiety, insomnia, poor sleep quality, and their determining factors. Methods: This is a cross-sectional survey study. A form with sociodemographic questions was sent out, alongside the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, and the Beck Depression and Anxiety Inventories. Data collection took place between August 2021 and January 2022. Descriptive statistical analysis and measures of association calculations were performed. The study was approved by a Research Ethics Committee. Results: The sample consisted of 53 students, with a majority being female (52.8%), aged between 18 and 29 years (84.9%), and identifying as white (67.9%). Depression and anxiety symptoms were reported by 83% and 50.9% of the participants, respectively. Excessive daytime sleepiness was observed in 15% of the students, while 77.4% scored for poor sleep quality. There was a moderate positive correlation between mental health symptoms and the Pittsburgh scale. Depression symptoms increased the likelihood of poor sleep quality (OR 28.4; CI 95% 1.75-149). Conclusion: In the population of medical students, depression symptoms can negatively affect sleep quality.
