Abstract
Objective: To analyze the process of identification, pharmacological management and clinical implications of systemic arterial hypertension (SAH) in oncology patients during hospital stay. Methods: Retrospective, quantitative study, carried out over three months in a hospital specializing in gynecological tumors. Epidemiological and clinical data were collected from medical records. Results: 417 hospitalizations were analyzed, including patients with SAH (47.96%) and without SAH (52.04%). The comorbidity was identified mainly by pharmacists (76%) and the classes of antihypertensives most used for management were: diuretics (26.30%), angiotensin II receptor antagonists (21.85%) and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors. angiotensin (18.89%). Among hypertensive patients, 75.32% had systolic blood pressure ≥ 150 mmHg during hospital stay. Of the hospitalizations, 55.64% were for surgical procedures, 19.40% of which were cancelled. In the hypertensive group, 25.20% of surgeries were canceled due to lack of clinical conditions, a reason not observed among patients without SAH. Only 15.5% of hypertensive patients underwent antineoplastic treatment prior to hospitalization, indicating that SAH was not triggered by chemotherapy. Conclusion: The prevalence of SAH in hospitalized patients with gynecological cancer is high. The clinical pharmacist is essential to optimize the identification and treatment of this comorbidity, minimizing the negative impacts of decompensated hypertension.
