Abstract
Objective: To analyze the pharmacoeconomic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the consumption of antimicrobials in a hospital, providing information on the use of these medications in tragedy situations. Methods: Secondary-based retrospective observational study in a hospital in Ceará, analyzing data from 2019 to 2021, divided into three periods corresponding to the pandemic. We assessed the impact of COVID-19 costs on the consumption of antimicrobials, through partial cost-consequence analysis. Data were summarized in figures with averages, medians and 95% confidence intervals. Kruskal-Wallis and ANOVA tests were used to compare averages between periods. Approved by the Research Ethics Committee. Results: We observed an 84% increase in the cost of antimicrobials in the third peak of the pandemic, coinciding with the increase in mortality rates. The consumption of antimicrobial bottles followed the increase in total cost, with statistically significant results (p-value < 0.05). Conclusion: We conclude that the third pandemic period had a significantly greater impact on the use and cost of antimicrobials. We recommend multicenter, clinically focused studies on this topic.
