Abstract
Objective: Deepen the discussion on infections related to the use of menstrual cups, with a particular focus on Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS). Methods: Conducted on the PubMed Central database using descriptors such as 'vaginal cup AND infections,' 27 articles were identified, of which 9 were selected for review. Results: The research revealed a notable proliferation of Staphylococcus aureus and an intensification in toxin production in menstrual cups compared to other absorbent methods. This may be attributed to the introduction of air into the vaginal canal by the cups. In vitro evaluations indicated that the proper use of the cup does not impact the vaginal microbiota. Despite this, cups are well-received by users due to ease of use, economic, and environmental aspects. Final considerations: When used correctly and maintaining appropriate hygiene standards, menstrual cups prove to be effective tools. However, improper use may facilitate bacterial multiplication, potentially triggering severe complications such as TSS.
