Abstract

Objective: To describe the most significant information about borderline personality disorder (BPD) and its epigenetic factors. Bibliographic Review: The clinical manifestations present in Borderline personality disorder may be based on changes in genes that act in the limbic system, such as glutamatergic receptors, oxytocin and vasopressin. However, it is believed that environmental factors such as sexual abuse, abandonment and neglect, bullying, and major childhood traumas are important triggers in the manifestation of the disorder. The diagnosis is made based on the identification of symptoms and questionnaires such as SCID-II and PID 5. Treatment is made based on an association between drug treatment and psychological and behavioral therapies and approaches from different currents of psychology. Final considerations: The disorder is directly associated with the relationship between genetic and environmental factors that the individual experiences throughout their life. However, the lack of new concrete studies on the relationship between genetics and the environment makes scientific advances in this area difficult.
