Abstract
Objective: To analyze the relationship between Impostor Phenomenon (IF), social aspects, anxiety and depression in medical students. Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive and quantitative study was conducted with 213 students between the first and eighth semesters of the undergraduate medical course at a private educational institution. A sociodemographic questionnaire, the Clance Scale of the Impostor Phenomenon, the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) were used. Results: There was a significant difference in IF scores between genders, with a mean of 3.25 for women and 2.8 for men (p = 0.0075). Furthermore, significant differences in IF were found between age, especially in the 18-24 and 25-34 age groups (p = 0.0248). There was also a positive correlation between IF and depression (rs = 0.5989, p < 0.0001) and between IF and anxiety (rs = 0.5705, p < 0.0001). Conclusion: The performance of this study revealed that there is a directly proportional interaction between IF, anxiety and depression, in addition to demonstrating that females and the age group between 18 and 23 years have greater chances of developing IF. Further research should be done with interventions for IF that can demonstrate a positive impact on mental health.
