Abstract

Objective: To analyze semaglutide’s physiological impacts in patients with obesity or overweight. Methods: This review used several databases, which were: Scielo, Scopus and PubMed. Articles published between 2020 and 2023 were selected using the Rayyan tool. At the end of the study, 20 articles were selected among all the findings. The inclusion criterias used were pertinence, relevance and scope of theoretical and practical approaches. Results: The use of semaglutide showed more weight loss in comparison to other counterparts. Furthermore, it was capable of maintaining weight loss after treatment and enabled a better quality of life. Nonetheless, gastrointestinal problems, which caused treatment withdrawal, along with some contraindications and important adverse effects were identified. Final considerations: It is considered therefore, despite the various adverse effects, mainly gastrointestinal, the treatment with semaglutide still was a very efficient solution for weight loss.
