Abstract

Objective: To understand how self-esteem is affected by the side effects caused by oncological treatments. Literature review: The self-esteem of individuals undergoing oncological treatments is an aspect of extreme importance and relevance. Patients diagnosed with cancer often need to cope with physical and emotional changes, as well as uncertainty about the future and concerns about mortality, which can trigger feelings of hopelessness and consequently a decrease in self-esteem. Therefore, various psychosocial interventions have been developed to promote the self-esteem of patients. These interventions have shown beneficial results in improving the self-esteem of patients in oncological treatments. It is also important to highlight the role of the multidisciplinary team in seeking proper management of side effects, along with the patients and caregivers. Final considerations: Thus, it is a fact that cancer affects the self-esteem of people who need to undergo oncological treatments, which can be toxic. The physical, psychological, and social impact of cancer can affect the self-image of patients, compromising their quality of life and treatment adherence. Therefore, it is of utmost importance that healthcare professionals be attentive to these issues and offer appropriate support in order to promote the self-esteem of patients.
