Abstract
Objective: Discuss the use of herbal medicines in the treatment of gastrointestinal tract diseases. Bibliographical review: The history of the use of herbal medicines in the treatment of illnesses dates back to ancient civilizations, persisting due to cultural and economic factors. In Brazil, phytotherapy is relevant, driven by popular traditions and a rich diversity of plants. Phytotherapy is crucial to public health, providing accessible options, although it requires precautions due to possible adverse reactions. Phytotherapy in Brazil is reinforced by government regulations, highlighting herbal medicines (MF) and traditional herbal products (PTF). Several plants, such as artichokes and mint, are recommended for gastrointestinal problems, with some included in the National List of Essential Medicines. Scientific evidence supports the use of herbal medicines for gastrointestinal diseases, highlighting beneficial properties of plants inside and outside Brazil. However, it is crucial to consider drug interactions and potential risks, especially in severe cases. Final considerations: Phytotherapy in Brazil seeks to rescue traditions, expand access to alternative treatments and promote health. The emphasis on gastrointestinal conditions highlights the relevance of these therapies, but the need for more in-depth studies and awareness among health professionals is highlighted to effectively guide the use of herbal medicines..
