Abstract

Objective: To identify the scientific evidence available in the literature in the last five years on the biopsychosocial impacts of low visual acuity on the quality of life of elderly people. Methods: Integrative literature review in databases, Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS), Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (Medline) via National Center for Biotechnology Information (PubMed), Web of Science, Scopus (Elsevier), Scopus (Elsevier) and Embase (Elsevier), held in April 2023. The descriptors “elderly” were used; “visual acuity”, “diminished vision”. Results: The final sample consisted of 8 articles, which described the biopsychosocial effects of low vision on the quality of life of elderly people with greater evidence in the literature as a probability of developing symptoms of anxiety, depression, social isolation and risk of falls. Final considerations: Biopsychosocial impacts were identified as influencing the quality of life of elderly people, in significant proportions associated with low visual acuity. It is believed that health professionals should be aware of the biopsychosocial changes related to low visual acuity in the elderly, inherent to aging and that can harm the routine of these people, with a significant impact on quality of life, physical and mental health.
