Abstract

Objective: To describe the characteristics of Brugada Syndrome (BrS) and associate Covid-19 as a risk factor. Literature review: BrS is a rare, autosomal dominant genetic disease, characterized by the presence of specific electrocardiographic characteristics with or without clinical symptoms. It has a relatively recent description in the medical literature, as it was described for the first time in 1992, when the Brugadas presented recurrent cases of sudden death. Patients are generally young adults, at high risk of sudden death from ventricular fibrillation. It has a specific treatment, which is the implantation of an electrical cardioverter. An association was observed between problems related to COVID-19 infection, such as fever, electrolyte disturbances and inflammatory stress, with transient Brugada-type symptoms and Electrocardiogram (ECG) patterns, as well as susceptibility to pro-arrhythmogenic episodes. Final considerations: It is necessary to expand knowledge on this topic, with more up-to-date data, to contribute to clinical management and early diagnosis. ECG with a Brugada pattern associated with COVID-19 appears relatively rare and most patients have had resolution of the ECG pattern once symptoms have improved.
