Abstract

Objective: To develop a care protocol for the care of respiratory distress syndrome in premature newborns. Methods: Integrative review of the literature in the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SCIELO) and Virtual Health Library (VHL) databases using health science descriptors (DeCS). Full articles that addressed the study topic published in the last seven years in Portuguese were included. The collected data were grouped into synoptic tables, facilitating observation and interpretation of the data. Ethical criteria were respected, regarding the legitimacy of the information and guarantee of authorship of the articles researched. Results: The study consists of 07 articles that discuss premature newborns, respiratory distress syndrome and the role of nursing in their treatment. Final considerations: Respiratory distress syndrome in premature newborns requires complex and multidisciplinary management, ventilatory support associated with surfactant therapy is essential for the clinical improvement of the newborn, in-depth knowledge of the pathophysiology, combined with preventive interventions and targeted assistance, nursing stands out as a key player in the care of newborns with respiratory distress syndrome.
