Abstract

Objective: Quantify and analyze the institution of Palliative Care (PC), as well as to estimate in-hospital mortality and survival of patients determined to be in PC. Methods: Is a cross-sectional, descriptive and quantitative study, involving case analysis of 70 patients undergoing PC in a tertiary hospital. The NECPAL-BR scale (nationally validated) was used, which is capable of identify and take early actions in patients requiring palliation. These were separated into categories: negative NECPAL, positive NECPAL I and II. The analysis was performed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences™ (SPSS), version 21.  Results: Of the 42 patients (60.0%) who died during hospitalization: 25 (59.52%) were NECPAL I; 17 (40.48%) were NECPAL II and none were NECPAL negative. All the NECPAL II patients died during the same hospitalization, with survival of less than 60 days, while the NECPAL negative patients (03 patients) were hospital discharged. Furthermore, although none of the interviewees were familiar with the NECPAL-BR scale, 67 out of 70 patients (95%) agreed with its criteria. Conclusion: The NECPAL-BR tool can improve mortality prediction and aid decision-making, providing the team with more accurate information on prognosis. The presence of all three NECPAL criteria (NECPAL II) increases the tool's predictive capacity.
