Abstract
Objective: To report a clinical case of an interdisciplinary approach to the correction of a gummy smile. Case details: This report was submitted to the research ethics committee and approved under protocol number CAEE 73608223.8.0000.0122. A 23-year-old female patient came to the clinic complaining of an esthetic problem related to the proportion of her teeth and gums. During the clinical examination, a gummy smile was diagnosed, and complementary clinical and photographic exams were performed to identify the etiology. The patient was diagnosed with altered passive eruption and conoid teeth. Interdisciplinary treatment was proposed to the patient, and an esthetic crown lengthening was performed using the flapless technique to restore the height of the supracrestal tissues. After complete tissue healing, dental whitening was performed using the in-office technique and a restorative procedure using composite resin veneers. Correct diagnosis of a gummy smile is extremely important for decision-making regarding treatment. Several therapies, especially those acting in an interdisciplinary manner, can be proposed and must be carefully evaluated in order to achieve the most satisfactory result with the greatest predictability of success. Final considerations: The correct diagnosis of the gummy smile allowed for a correct approach, which enabled successful treatment.
