Abstract

Objective: To provide an overview of the latest clinical results and current use of key elements of Fast Track pathways in orthopedic surgery. Methods: This is an integrative, exploratory and descriptive review research. The data search was carried out in the Medline/Pubmed and Science Direct databases. Results: In the initial search, 824 studies were identified. And after careful analysis, 11 studies were eligible for the review. 10,577 patients undergoing orthopedic surgery were analyzed, with a higher prevalence of female individuals. The most commonly performed type of surgery was Total Hip and Knee Arthroplasty. Most Fast Track protocols included approaches for the perioperative period, and involved an educational class, multimodal analgesia, and physical therapy immediately after the surgical procedure. All studies emphasized that this protocol provided lower complication rates, reduced hospital stay/hospitalization time and early recovery. Final considerations: It is noteworthy that Fast Track protocols present a wide range of advantages, however uniformity was not found between the protocols used in the studies.
