Abstract

Objective: To verify whether there is scientific evidence proving the relationship between the use of bisphosphonates and osteonecrosis of the jaw, as well as what other risk factors may be involved. Methods: Integrative literature review, including clinical, randomized, retrospective and prospective studies carried out from 2016 to verify recent scientific evidence that investigated whether bisphosphonates increase the risk of osteonecrosis of the jaw. Only scientific articles indexed in Medline/PubMed databases were used; IBECS, Lilacs and BBO-Dentistry. Results: Eight studies were found that met the inclusion criteria, showing that the literature on osteonecrosis of the mandible related to bisphosphonates remains scarce in randomized clinical studies with control groups. However, there is already enough evidence to indicate that this risk exists, being mainly related to the use of intravenous bisphosphonates associated with the occurrence of dentoalveolar surgical trauma, not just due to the exclusive use of the drug. Final considerations: Health professionals are warned that they should indicate to patients who may need therapy with bisphosphonates that, before starting such treatment, they seek dental surgeons for dental prophylaxis and carry out the necessary dental interventions, avoiding having to carry them out while they are being treated with these drugs.
