Abstract

Aim: To investigate the usefulness of active partner search in the treatment of gestational syphilis, and to describe the outcomes of pregnant women with syphilis with a treated and untreated partner. Methods: This is an integrative literature review of articles published between 2015 and 2020 in the Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS), Web of Science, PubMed, EMBASE, Science Direct and Scientific Electronic databases Library Online (SciElo) in English, Portuguese, and Spanish with the following Medical Subject Headings: syphilis, couple infection, treatment, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Results: We selected eighteen articles and identified 9257 pregnant women with gestational syphilis. However, only 1673 (24%) of the partners were treated. The main outcomes were preterm (34%), stillbirth (27%) and small for gestational age (20%). Treatment was considered inappropriate in most studies. The strategies for searching for the communicant were the use of the notification card (NC), NC plus a short message service or NC plus telephone contact. Final considerations: Efforts must be made to improve communication about the disease, support the pregnant woman to communicate with her partner, improve access to a quality health service and monitor those involved to ensure treatment and confirmation of the cure.
