Abstract

Objective: To analyze the temporal trend and spatial distribution of mortality from skin cancer in the elderly (≥60 years) in the Brazilian Northeast region. Methods: This is an ecological study carried out based on records in the online Mortality Atlas of the National Cancer Institute, from 2000 to 2020. The spatial distribution in the northeastern states was verified and the statistical technique of simple linear regression was used. Results: 2,400 deaths from malignant skin melanoma (C43) and 8,118 deaths from other malignant skin neoplasms (C44) were recorded. The highest mortality rate was in Bahia, Ceará, Pernambuco and Paraíba. There was a trend of increasing mortality in the elderly in all age groups (p<0.001). Conclusion: This study allowed us to understand the temporal patterns of mortality from skin cancer in the elderly in the nine northeastern states. A higher mortality trend can be observed in individuals over 80 years of age.
