Abstract

Objective: To find in the scientific literature the effects of exposure of fetus to the electronic cigarettes (EC). Methods: This is an integrative literature review, with articles in Portuguese and English, published in the last five years (2019 to 2023), this research was carried out in August and September 2023, used the descriptors: Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems, pregnancy, fetus, electronic cigarettes, vaping, pregnancy, combining Boolean operators "and" and "or", search in the databases: Google Scholar; Virtual Health Library (VHL), National Library of Medicine (PubMed) and EBSCOhost. Results: 20 articles were selected, according to inclusion and exclusion criteria, and was possible to find several associations between the use of vaping, during and after pregnancy, with harmful effects on the fetus. There are pulmonary, neurological, behavioral, maternal-fetal vascular, gene expression, inflammatory, metabolic, and hepatic consequences. There are also anthropometric repercussions, prematurity, abortion and reduced breastfeeding. Final considerations: These findings prove the dysfunctional power of this substance to the conceptus, so is necessary discourage its consumption, especially during and after pregnancy. This article contributes to scientific knowledge by synthesizing current research on vaping, so more studies on this topic are essential for better elucidation of its harmful effects on the fetus and newborn.
