Abstract
Objective: To analyze the impact of rampant antibiotic use during the pandemic and its relation to bacterial resistance. Methods: This is an integrative review with a qualitative approach, examining scientific articles from Google Scholar, EbscoHost, PubMed, and SciELO, published between 2019 and 2023, in languages that include English, Portuguese, and Spanish. Results: Lack of knowledge about antibiotics and the dissemination of inadequate information led to a quest for quick and improvised treatment solutions. This phenomenon contributed to the rise in antimicrobial resistance, mainly in low- and middle-income countries with fewer resources, impacting the global economy by increasing medication sales while compromising public health. Hence, discussions focused on crisis management, emphasizing the urgent need to expand research into new antibiotics, improve infection prevention methods, and explore COVID-19 treatment alternatives. Final considerations: It can be considered that the pandemic escalated antimicrobial usage and its effect on bacterial resistance, vital for understanding public health challenges and guiding future health policies.
