Abstract
Objective: To review the literature regarding the use of screening tools to detect cases of leprosy. Methods: bibliographical research conducted in US National Library of Medicine – PubMed and Virtual Health Library – BVS electronic databases, and in government documents available on websites of the Ministry of Health; World Health Organization; Pan American Health Organization; Websites of State and Municipal Health Secretariats in Brazil; as well as documents on non-governmental websites: Global Partnership of Zero Leprosy; Novartis Foundation and Netherlands Leprosy Relief (NLR). The articles selected in the electronic databases were transferred and analyzed in the Rayyan application, for quantification and identification of duplicates. Results: There were identified 3 leprosy self-screening instruments: the Self-Image Form from the Brazilian Ministry of Health, the Leprosy Suspicion Questionnaire (LSQ), by Bernardes Filho and Frade, brazilian researchers and the Self-Screening Instrument used in Indonesia for extended screening of cases. The most complete instruments is the LSQ, covering 14 questions about the signs and symptoms of leprosy and the family history of the disease, in addition, its application in epidemiological studies has shown that the instrument can identify new cases of the disease in individuals with positive signs and symptoms. Final considerations: the self-screening instruments in leprosy proved to be an allied tool to the detection of new cases in different epidemiological contexts, they are configured as educational material and facilitate the screening of cases to be prioritized in the dermato-neurological examination in population approaches.
