Abstract

Objective: To estimate the occurrence and factors associated with dynapenia in adult and elderly women with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods: Cross-sectional study carried out in the endocrinology outpatient clinic of a hospital in Recife, between July/2022 and February/2023. Dynapenia was defined when handgrip strength was less than 16 kg. Sociodemographic, clinical, anthropometric, body composition and biochemical characteristics were collected to determine factors associated with dynapenia, using bivariates analyzes and robust Poisson regression. The data were analyzed using SPSS Statistics software and the study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee. Results: Data from 164 women with a mean age of 60.04 ± 9.02 years were analyzed. It was identified that 20.1% had dynapenia, and after regression analysis, this condition was associated with low education (p=0.001), white race/color (p=0.008), excess weight (p=0.015) and reduced muscle mass (p<0.001). Conclusion: In this study, a high occurrence of dynapenia was observed, associated with several sociodemographic, anthropometric and body composition factors. These results highlight the importance of evaluating this condition with the aim of minimizing the adverse health effects that dynapenia can cause in this population.
