Abstract
Objective: To analyze the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on corneal transplantation. Bibliographic review: Corneal transplantation is a worldwide procedure, which has fundamental importance on the quality of life of patients. During the pandemic, the corneal transplant process underwent changes in donor screening, tissue collection and preservation. Also noteworthy are new contraindications during corneal donation, which triggered the need to develop artificial corneas to meet this demand. In this sense, new studies are being carried out on corneal graft rejection after vaccination against COVID-19, in addition to new ways of preserving corneal tissue. In view of this, a multidisciplinary reorganization between health professionals and patients is necessary to face this high demand. Final considerations: In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, measures were proposed in order to prevent the contamination, contingencies that proved to be expendable. Therefore, it is essential that more studies are carried out to better understand the relationship between COVID-19 and the cornea.
