Abstract
Objective: To analyze the perceptions of doctors and nurses regarding the bedside rounding process format experienced by them in different hospital departments. Methods: Qualitative research with data collected through systematic observation strategies and semi-structured scripted interviews with doctors and nurses from the Hospitalization Unit (UNI) and the Intensive Care Unit (CTI) of a Belo Horizonte hospital, Minas Gerais. Discourse analysis from a Foucauldian perspective was used for data analysis. This study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee. Results: While doctors perceive bedside rounding as a moment to define therapeutic behaviors, nurses perceive it as a tool that guides their care and administrative actions. We identified that a medical-centered approach does not consider the patient in its entirety, and it’s used as an instrument of medical education, mostly in the hospitalization unit. Conclusion: This study presents bedside rounding as a reflection of the relational environment, which makes collaborative care impossible. Although there are divergences in each hospital department regarding bedside rounding, the elements and circumstances that influence the system are similar, given that medical necessity was identified as the main reason for organizing care.
