Abstract

Objective: To analyze and understand the competencies of the preceptor, based on pedagogical action aimed at developing clinical competencies. Methods: A search was carried out in the PubMed/MEDLINE database, directly with a search strategy, through the combination of descriptors and Boolean operators ("Preceptorship" [Mesh]) AND ("Clinical Competence" [Mesh]) used as a search expression and with the application of filters, from 2018 to 2023. Results: A list of 1,493 articles was obtained and with the application of the first exclusion criterion, 173 articles remained that contained information on the topic, but only 28 were selected for analysis. The categories that stood out described the pedagogical relationship between preceptor and student, concepts and characteristics of preceptorship and the work of the preceptor, as facilitating the development of knowledge in the institutional environment and capable of providing greater support for clinical learning, through pedagogical projects aimed at teaching clinical practice. The articles selected appeared in different parts of the world, but with a greater emphasis on countries such as Brazil, the USA and South Africa. Final considerations: The role of the preceptor confirms the need for knowledge that preceptorship requires, based on pedagogy for learning and contributes to professionalism in working relationships.
