Abstract

Objective: To identify the general aspects of obesity treatment through the use of liraglutide and its main clinical manifestations with an update on the topic in the national literature. Literature review: The effect resulting from prescribing liraglutide for the treatment of obesity works through the metabolic precursor of a glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist, which means it mimics the action of a natural hormone called GLP -1. GLP-1 helps regulate blood sugar levels by increasing insulin secretion, reducing glucagon production, and slowing gastric emptying. Clinical manifestations evolve with transient gastrointestinal adverse reactions, including nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Furthermore, there are other manifestations presented in the literature, such as cholelithiasis and cholecystitis, as well as thyroid diseases and increased heart rate. Final considerations: Clinical manifestations resulting from the use of liraglutide for the treatment of obesity are relatively rare, but very underdiagnosed. These are extremely important clinical conditions, mainly due to the recognition of metabolic changes, and must be recognized by health professionals. Early diagnosis of clinical manifestations and effective treatment prevents damage to various organs, reducing the harmfulness of medication in the treatment of obesity.
