Abstract

Objective: This work aimed to describe the morphophysiology of the skin and the process of skin aging. Literature review: The skin is the largest organ in the human body and, in addition to protection, it performs several physiological functions. Over the years, it tends to enter the natural aging process, however, some agents external to the body can accelerate this aging and cause an early appearance of wrinkles and sagging, characteristic of aging. The signs and characteristics of skin aging are mainly due to the degradation of collagen fibers, where their absence causes a loss of filling in the extracellular matrix and the loss of elastic fibers, causing the tissue to lose elasticity. Final considerations: Among the inducing factors extrinsic to the body are exposure to sunlight, tobacco, pollution and poor diet, these factors lead to the formation of reactive oxygen species and these species activate cascades of reactions that degrade collagen fibers and elastic bands, thus inducing premature aging of the skin.
