Abstract

Objective: To carry out a literature review in order to understand the effects of dietary interventions on rheumatoid arthritis. Methods: Literature review from the last 10 years, in accordance with PRISMA (Preference Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis) recommendations through electronic search in the PubMed, Lilacs and SciELO databases, using the health descriptors rheumatoid arthritis AND diet and rheumatoid arthritis AND diet, being selected through clinical trials with adults and/or elderly people. Results: Studies have shown that patients with rheumatoid arthritis who consumed a Mediterranean diet or a diet containing foods that are sources of nutrients with anti-inflammatory and/or antioxidant properties, as well as dietary supplements, showed an improvement in disease activity indexes such as DAS-28 (Disease Activity Score), inflammatory markers such as CRP (C-reactive protein), ESR (homosedimentation rate) and anti-CCP (anticyclic citrullinated peptide), and quality of life. Final considerations: Dietary interventions and nutritional supplementation can contribute to improving the clinical condition and quality of life of patients with RA. However, additional studies are necessary.
