Abstract
Objective: Identify in the scientific literature biological tests, in vitro, on the antimicrobial action of ferulic acid (FA). Methods: The present study is an integrative review of the literature, especially in the PUBMED database. It was decided to carry out a study over the last 5 years due to updates on the topic covered. Results: A total of 682 were identified in the databases, making a final sample of 09 works for the construction of this article. Currently, research in the field of developing new antimicrobials with FA is focused on the area of biomaterials. It is known that the biomaterial that has been most used in studies is chitosan. In this review, 66.6% of the selected articles included the use of biofilms and FA and chitosan conjugates. Microbiological analyzes included minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal tests. It was possible to verify that FA, when associated with chitosan, presents better action against the microbial strains tested. Final considerations: FA combined with chitosan showed potential application prospects. However, more multidisciplinary research is needed for the development of antimicrobials and antibacterials, which are currently a growing threat to global health.
