Abstract

Objective: To analyze the socioepidemiological profile of maternal mortality in Piauí in relation to Northeast Brazil during the period from 2012 to 2021, considering the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A quantitative and retrospective study on maternal mortality, conducted through the Mortality Information System of DATASUS. Results: In the Northeast, 5,872 maternal deaths were recorded, with 417 reported in Piauí. In Piauí and the Northeast, the majority of maternal deaths occurred in women aged 20 to 29 years (41.0%) and 30 to 39 years (39.8%) respectively, of brown race (71.9% and 67.8%), with 8 to 11 years of education (28.1% and 34.7%), and unmarried (33.6% and 45.5%). Direct obstetric cause was the main contributor to deaths in both Piauí and the Northeast, with 68.4% and 64.6% respectively. Piauí ranked second with the highest maternal mortality ratio in the Northeast. Conclusion: Piauí's maternal mortality rate above the regional average and below the WHO target revealed shortcomings in maternal health care. Furthermore, the increase in mortality in 2021, related to COVID-19, highlighted the urgent need for improvements in maternal health.
