Abstract
Objective: To identify the perceptions of women affected by breast cancer, treated at an oncology specialized hospital, regarding illness and coping strategies, under the framework of the Health Belief Model. Methods: A descriptive exploratory, cross-sectional study with a qualitative approach was conducted in the chemotherapy department of an oncological hospital between january 2020 and february 2021. Forty women participated, undergoing interviews based on a semi-structured model. Data were analyzed using Bardin's Content Analysis. Results: The majority of the studied women underwent breast-conserving surgery and did not receive radiotherapy. A significant portion was undergoing chemotherapy. About half of the sample noticed breast changes before the pandemic. The analysis yielded categories: "Perceptions of Cancer," "Perception of Severity: Signs and Symptoms of the Disease," "Challenges and Discovery Journey," and "Perception of Benefits." Conclusion: Health behaviors following the diagnosis are influenced by individual beliefs about the studied variables. Understanding this process is crucial for more effective healthcare interventions for women undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer.
