Abstract

Objective: The research aimed to investigate the influence of factors associated with overweight and obesity in schoolchildren. Methods: This is a cross-sectional, descriptive study, which was carried out in a school in the interior of Paraíba, with a sample of 212 students aged 7 to 10 years. The data was collected in two stages, the first will be an anthropometric assessment of the students and the second, the application of the DAFA questionnaire (Typical day of physical activity and food consumption). Results: The results showed that 17.24% of the students are overweight, 21.18% are obese and only 0.49% are severely obese. As for food, with regard to the consumption of sugars and fats, a significant difference was found between the eutrophic population and the overweight and obese population. The other food groups showed no significant difference. Regarding recreational physical activities, those that showed a significant relationship with the nutritional status of the students were skateboarding, swimming, playing ball and jumping rope. Children who did not practice these types of activities showed a greater tendency to overweight than those who practice. Conclusion: Due to the severity of obesity and its obesity, the percentage of children who are overweight in the present study is worrying, totaling 38.91%.
