Abstract
Objective: To describe the trend of the mortality rate by esophageal cancer (EC) in different geographical areas, from 2011 to 2020. Methods: This is an ecological time series study, where data on deaths and on the population were obtained from the Mortality Information System and the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, respectively. The temporal trend was analyzed with simple linear regression. Results: The increase of deaths from EC was 38.83% in the northern macro-region of Minas Gerais, 15.39% in the state of Minas Gerais, 3.99% in the Southeast region and 8.78% in Brazil. Conclusion: The increase of the mortality rate in the northern macro-region of Minas Gerais was greater than the increase in the state of Minas Gerais and in Brazil, which tended towards stability. It is suggested that changes in patterns of exposure to risk factors or greater access to diagnostic means contributed to the increase in rates.
