Abstract
Objective: Verify the knowledge of emergency room professionals about the indications and contraindications for restricting spinal movement. Methods: This is an exploratory, descriptive study with a quantitative approach carried out in an emergency and trauma hospital in the city of Goiânia, Brazil, in June 2023. Data collection was carried out using a structured questionnaire addressing indications and contraindications for restriction described in the 10th edition of Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS). Results: The study sample consisted of 42 professionals, 11.9% physiotherapists, 23.8% nurses and 64.3% doctors. The highest frequency of error in the answers obtained in the questionnaire in relation to restriction indications and contraindications was in the item “penetrating trauma to the head” with 76.2% and the highest frequency of correct answers was seen in the item “pain and/or hypersensitivity in the line spine average”, verifying an average of 69.5% correct answers in the questionnaire administered. Conclusion: The findings demonstrate that the biggest doubt among professionals is in the situation of penetrating head trauma, making it necessary to develop a protocol regarding restriction in emergency and trauma environments, in addition to continuous training for a better clinical outcome for patients cared for by professionals.
