Abstract

Objective: To describe surgical and histopathological outcomes of patients undergoing conization to treat cervical injuries. Methods: Cross-sectional, retrospective and analytical study was carried out to compare biological and demographic characteristics, surgical outcomes, postoperative complications and histopathological results between surgical techniques (cold scalpel vs. electric scalpel). Results: In total, 74 patients were evaluated, 47% by cold scalpel and 52.7% by electric scalpel. No significant difference was found between the technique using the cold scalpel compared to the electric scalpel, respectively for intraoperative bleeding (5.7% x 15.4%; p=0.267), need for re-approach (8.6% x 7.7%; p=1.00), average duration of surgery (48 min x 45 min; p=0.434) and time to hospital discharge (24h x 24h; p=0.930). The histopathological result of the specimen confirmed cervical intraepithelial neoplasia in 77.2% for cold scalpel and 87.1% for electric scalpel (p=0.034). There was no difference between the groups for margin involvement (p=0.149) and glandular occupation of the specimen in the histopathological result (p=0.894). Conclusion: There was statistical agreement between abnormal cytopathological exams and normal histopathological findings. No significant difference was observed in the duration of surgery, time to hospital discharge or the percentage of complications.
