Abstract

Objective: To assess the prevalence of Binge Eating Disorder (BED) among medical students and characterize the association between BED and sociodemographic profiles. Methods: This is a quantitative cross-sectional study involving medical students from the 1st to the 4th year of a medical school located in Campo Grande (MS). A sociodemographic questionnaire and the Binge Eating Scale (BES) were administered. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee. Results: Out of 120 responses, a prevalence of 17.5% was obtained, with 13.3% corresponding to moderate BED and 4.2% to severe BED. Furthermore, the median BES score was 7 (P25: 3, P75: 15), ranging from zero to 41 points, with a mean of 9.858 (SD ± 8.08). The participants had a homogeneous sociodemographic profile, with associations found only between BED and the mode of transportation used to get to the university (p = 0.026) and to reach internship sites (p = 0.039). There were no associations with biological sex, age, ethnicity, family income, employment status, government financial assistance, or type of housing. Conclusion: There is a higher prevalence of BED among medical students compared to the general population; however, there is no significant association with sociodemographic factors.
